The historic vote in Staten Island now makes openly gay Matthew Titone a member of the NYS Assembly, adding to the openly gay voice in the New York Legislature. Long a bastion of conservative politics in New York State, Staten Island elected the son of a state judge to fill the vacancy created by the death of former Assemblymember and Democratic County Chair John Lavelle. Titone will join other openly GLBT lawmakers in the minor legislative house held by a Democratic majority that now includes Assemblymembers Deborah Glick and Danny O'Donnell. The State Senate, with an every narrowing Republican majority, has one GLBT lawmaker, Senator Tom Duane among its ranks.
